In Augusto Boal text, Theatre of the Oppressed, he presents the experience in Peru of a program of the Integral Literacy Operation – Operacion Alfabetizacion Integral (ALFIN) – using Paulo Freire’s methodology. The organizer of ALFIN formulated two main ways to teach the communities involved: 1) to teach literacy in both the first language and in Spanish without forcing the abandonment of the former in favor of the latter; 2) to teach literacy in all possible languages, especially the artistic ones, such as theater, photography, puppetry, films, journalism, etc. In the text, Boal proposes to relate his person experience in the theatrical area. In working with theater he presented that the oppressed could express themselves usind this theatrical language and through this experience they could discover new concepts. He explains that in order to understand the poetics of the oppressed the goal is to chance people from being mere spectators – passive human beings – “into subjects, into actors, transformers of the dramatic action” (122).
